If you’ve got a fridge that smells like rotten meat, here are some tips to help you get the odor out.

• If it’s been some time since you’ve cleaned the fridge, make sure you give it a through wash; both inside and outside. Regular cleaners are usually safe to be used to clean the fridge. But if you’d rather go the natural way, add a little vinegar to the water used for cleaning the fridge.

• Baking soda is a great time tested product that helps to keep the fridge odor free. You can place some on a dish and keep it in the fridge for about 48 hours.

• Cleaning the fridge with vanilla extract also ensures that the odor is eliminated. To make your fridge smell clean, you can add soak up vanilla extract into a cotton ball and then place the ball inside the fridge.

• A lemon cut in half and placed inside the fridge also works well.

• There are several commercial products available that de-odorize and lower temperature inside the fridge.

While these are corrective measures, it’s also important to be mindful of a few preventive measures. Some preventive measures include cleaning the fridge regularly; making sure that the stale food is removed immediately. Also remember to compartmentalize and containerize everything. Strong smelling food items like onion can be kept in special containers that seal the smell and help to keep the fridge fresh and odor free. Check for the expiry date of products especially meat and poultry regularly.
